Peter The Airline Pilot Shares With You Some Things to Avoid on a Plane Flight During a Time of Turbulence

His first question was simply, “Are you frightened of going through turbulence on a plane flight? If this is true, then please carry on reading, because I would like to share with you my very top tips from myself”.

“Hello, I am Peter, an experienced Airline Pilot of many years’ standing, who wants to give you these top tips which I know will help you to survive turbulence”.

Avoid Alcohol

“Now, my very first tip”, Peter said, “is that, although you may feel extremely tempted, you really must Avoid Alcohol. Drinking alcohol because you are sitting there feeling terribly frightened, is just going to increase your anxiety levels, and when the turbulence does actually happen it will make you feel terribly air-sick. That is not going to be a way to get you through it, because you want to be able to thoroughly enjoy a good experience and enjoy your travelling and your holiday”.

“There are some passengers on a plane who think that drinking a glass or two of wine will help to calm down their anxiety and their nerves, but all it will do is simply increase their anxiety levels, as I have already said. Even drinking alcohol at the airport could make anyone feel unwell if their flight is struck by severe turbulence”. Peter added, “What you should do, is to try and zone out and concentrate on what is known as distractions”.

Avoid Reading A Book Or Doing A Crossword

“Some passengers like to read something like a really good book, which is not really a terribly good idea, because you’re trying to read small printed text that is bobbing up and down, and this is something that is obviously going to increase your chances of feeling that you are about to be physically sick. Trying to start and complete a crossword would have the same effect”.

Put The Flight Entertainment On, And Find A Very Good Movie, And Just Focus On The Story

“As for me, if I were in your position, I would definitely put the in-flight entertainment on, and then find a really brilliant movie which will keep my mind focused on the story, and use it as a distraction from the bumpiness of the flight. You should try and “zone out” completely and try to forget that you are actually on a plane that is going up and down. Things like “Distractions” are a really good method to decrease your levels of sheer, severe anxiety, if your plane does happen to go into turbulence. Fortunately it is a very good thing that long-haul plane flights these days, have a great range of entertainment to choose from. I mean, you could choose from a recording of a Shakespeare play, or a very well-known movie, or even some pop music. Just pop your headphones on and thoroughly enjoy whatever entertainment you have decided to choose. You could even listen to the current Top Twenty and see if you know all of the songs”.

Sit Back, Relax, And Imagine You Are On A Hammock

Peter then said, “Another comparatively simple tip, is to lie back, close your eyes, and imagine that you are on a hammock on the golden beach wherever it is you are probably travelling to, whether it’s Hawaii, California or even the Caribbean, and the plane is helping to rock you while you lie motionless on your hammock in the sun. Alternatively, you could also pretend that you are floating in a beautiful ocean like the Pacific Ocean, or the Indian Ocean, if that is what it takes to help you to calm your nerves and manage to get you through the spell of turbulence”.

Ask To Speak With One Of The Flight Attendants

Peter also said that if you are really afraid of what could happen during turbulence, a great idea is to speak with one of the flight attendants. What you should actually do, is to inform the airline in advance of the actual flight, that you are a very nervous flyer, and you get sea-sick at the very thought of even boarding a plane.

He said, “When we know that we have a very anxious and nervous flyer on board our plane, I like to go and talk to them, and have a really good helpful chat with them. I will find out where they are sitting, and I will make an effort to reassure them that they are in extremely good hands with very experienced staff who can really help them with their anxieties regarding the turbulence. I will tell them that flying is actually safer than crossing a busy road, and I will continue to reassure them that the aircraft is absolutely safe. They really do have absolutely nothing to worry about, or be fearful of. And of course, should they need it, we actually keep anti-sickness medication on board at all times simply because we know how extremely useful it can be for someone who really is feeling unwell and sea-sick. Or should I say air-sick”.

Turbulence Is Absolutely Nothing To Worry About

Peter also said, “There is absolutely nothing to worry about when the plane suddenly goes into turbulence. Turbulence itself is absolutely fine. And as I said before, what I do is, I go down the cabin, I say hello to everyone, and if I know there is a particularly scared passenger on board I will make time for them. Being reassured by an experienced airline pilot and also by the cabin crew can really help to calm the nerves of a nervous, anxious passenger”.

Always Wear A Seatbelt During Turbulence, And Always Follow The Cabin Crew’s Instructions

Peter’s next tip was, “All passengers should always wear a seatbelt during any episode of turbulence, and they should always follow the cabin crew’s instructions whatever they may be”.

One online traveller recently made a comment which said, “During our recent flight to Tampa in Florida, we encountered extremely severe turbulence on the way. Some members of the cabin crew appeared to be really scared and frightened, and they all looked as though the event was completely out of their control. All the passengers were instructed by the pilot to stay seated for hours on end. There were food and drinks trolleys laden with things like cottage pies and bottles of wine on them, abandoned everywhere, and also there were cans of drink, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, rolling around on the cabin floor”.

Peter said, “Aircraft passengers are more likely to suffer from bouts of turbulence on particular routes, which is due to either the weather, or how busy the particular flight path is. One of the very popular journeys is from New York to London, and it is on this route that the flight is most likely to become turbulent. Also, London to Glasgow is another common route for turbulence. Turbulent conditions can often be caused by very windy or rainy weather in the UK”.

Peter concluded by saying, “And although it might feel scary and you might well become extremely frightened by it, and very anxious, turbulence itself is not dangerous at all, and it is absolutely nothing to become very scared about. Modern aircraft are all built to withstand turbulence, and they are all able to cope with it, so please, try not to worry about it at all. And if your particular flight that you are on does actually hit turbulence, please don’t forget, that we carry anti-sickness medication on board”.

Holiday Time Is Here Today, or Sun, Sea, and Sandcastles – Part Two

International Travel is now back again and it is much easier for people to travel abroad from the UK, now that some of the restrictions have been made much easier. While the pandemic continued to rage across the world, the travel rules have been constantly changed, and this has made it difficult for people to even actually know whether they could possibly travel to particular destinations. They might have made a plan to visit Spain for two weeks, and then they might have found they could not even travel there for one reason or another.

Therefore, if you wish to travel abroad to a foreign country, for example in the middle of August, you will need to be aware of the different rules and restrictions when travelling. One new travel rule you will need to know, is that if you are arriving into the UK, or if you are returning from a holiday somewhere abroad and are coming back to the UK, you do not now need to take a Day Two test, as long as you are fully vaccinated. Another new travel rule is that Passenger Locator Forms are still in place, but Mr Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, has said there are plans for it to be removed.


If you are fully vaccinated, and you are going to be travelling from the UK to France, you do not need to test, but you must be able to present proof of your vaccination. You will also need to be able to present a completed sworn statement which officially certifies that you do not currently have any Covid-19 symptoms, and that you have not been in contact with a Covid-19 case in the last two weeks.

If you are not fully vaccinated, then you will need to be able to present your evidence of essential travel, as well as evidence of a negative PCR test which you have taken within the 72 hours before arriving in France, or an antigen test taken within 48 hours before you have arrived.


If you are going to travel to Italy, you will need to complete a Passenger Locator Form before you arrive there.

If you are fully vaccinated, you must show proof of your vaccination. You will also need to provide evidence of a negative PCR test which you have taken within the 72 hours before entering Italy, or a Covid-19 recovery certificate from the past six months stating that you are now fully recovered.

If, however, you are not able to provide any of these things, then you will have to travel to your final destination using private transport. When you have arrived there, you will need to self-isolate for five days. You will then need to notify the Prevention Department of the local health authority, and take another test at the end of the self-isolation period. You will be able to leave the self-isolation if the test is negative.


If you are fully vaccinated, and you are going to be travelling from the UK to mainland Portugal and the Azores, you will need to complete a Passenger Locator Form before your arrival there.

If you are fully vaccinated, you do not need to test.

If you are not fully vaccinated, you will need to show proof of a negative PCR test which you have taken no more than 72 hours before entering Portugal and the Azores, or a negative rapid lateral flow test which you have taken no more than 24 hours before your arrival.


Nearly all fully vaccinated people can travel to and enter the USA. Therefore, before you actually board a flight to go there, regardless of your vaccination status, you will need to show a negative Covid-19 test result which you have taken no more than one day before you travel. Your final vaccine dose must have been given to you at least 14 days before you travel.

All air passengers to the USA are required to give contact information to their airlines before actually boarding the aircraft, and therefore you should contact your airline about this some time before you travel.

You are also recommended to take a viral test within three to five days of your arrival in the USA, but this requirement is not mandatory.

The only people who can enter the USA if they are unvaccinated, are those with an exception, US citizens, US nationals, and US lawful permanent residents.


Canada has now eased some entry requirements for fully vaccinated people.

If you are fully vaccinated, you will no longer need a molecular Covid-19 test to enter Canada. Therefore, if you are fully vaccinated, then you will need either a negative rapid antigen test which you have taken no more than one day before you travel, or a molecular Covid-19 test within 72 hours of your departing flight.

Travellers who are now fully vaccinated, will no longer have to take a post-arrival Covid-19 lateral flow test when they enter the UK, and this rule also applies to British holidaymakers returning from a holiday overseas and coming back into the UK. Hundreds of families will be packing their bags, because they will now be able to jet off for their long-awaited annual holiday in the sun.

You may be one of those people who will be visiting and even staying with extended family, whom you have not seen since the beginning of the pandemic. You will be so looking forward to the break, that you have been steadily counting the days on your calendar until the day when you can fly off in a jet, or get onboard a ship. There will undoubtedly be a lot of family reunions on these forthcoming holidays.

Now It Is Time For The Holidays

UK holidaymakers who travel to foreign lands, must continue to follow the Covid-19 rules and regulations that apply at their destinations. Spain’s requirement that all children over 12 must be fully vaccinated, made many families in the UK cancel their booked holidays, and therefore Spain dropped this requirement. Spain has also dropped the mandatory wearing of facemasks outdoors, so if you are going to be having a break in Spain in the month of August, for example, you may go for a walk along the beach without wearing your facemask.

Eurostar, the cross-Channel train operator, have said that more than 125,000 people had booked to travel on their trains between the UK and the European Continent. The Chief Commercial Officer for Eurostar said, that because travel restrictions between the UK and France were being eased, they were seeing an increase in leisure bookings both in the short-term, and also more bookings looking further ahead to the Spring and the Summer, and even further ahead. Whole families were booking their places on Eurostar’s trains for many months ahead. He also said, that Eurostar would continue adding trains to their main routes, and also to the most popular routes throughout the coming months and beyond, and that they were looking forward to returning to their pre-pandemic frequent services.

Abta, the travel organization, said that Portugal, Turkey, and Egypt are now among the most popular short-haul countries, while departures to the American state of Florida, the Caribbean, Dubai, and Mexico have sold well for people going long-haul. They said that the ski resorts in Switzerland, France and Italy were in great demand for holidays, and that Stanstead Airport and Gatwick Airport, for example, were expecting thousands of travellers to depart for their long-awaited holidays.

Abta conducted a poll that showed 64% of families who had children under the age of 16 said, because the chances to travel had been so limited during the pandemic, they were now finding that their holidays are now more important to them than they ever were before. And people that were re-uniting with their families overseas, simply could not wait to see them again after such a long, long time.
