How A Heroic Aeroplane Passenger Who did not know how to fly, managed to land a plane when the pilot became unwell

When the pilot experienced a medical emergency because he had become sick and was unable to fly, the quick-thinking passenger immediately radioed air traffic control at Palm Beach International Airport in Florida, USA, for help from around 70 miles North of their destination. He was then heroically able to land the plane with the help of air traffic control guiding them.

The passenger, called George, told air traffic control: “Please can you possibly help us. I have a very serious situation here, because my pilot has become incoherent and is obviously very unwell. I have absolutely no idea whatsoever about how to fly this aeroplane. Please could you possibly help me, because I am extremely anxious about what to do”.

A dispatcher from air traffic control at Palm Beach International Airport almost immediately replied: “Roger. Are you able to tell me what your position is right now?”.

The passenger answered: “I have absolutely no idea. I can see the coast of Florida in front of me, but I have absolutely no idea – I have no idea whatsoever”.

The dispatcher then instructed the passenger: “OK. Just breathe evenly, and try to keep calm. I know this is a stressful situation for you, but whatever you do, please simply do not panic. Keep in constant contact with us. Keep the plane’s wings level and simply try to follow the coastline, either north-bound or south-bound. We are currently attempting to locate where you are”.

Luckily, the dispatchers could successfully locate the Cessna Caravan plane, which was flying about 25 miles North of Palm Beach in Boca Raton. They were then able to instruct the heroic passenger on how to very slowly and carefully descend the plane, and told him how to make a safe and somewhat steady landing at the airport.

Once the plane had safely and successfully landed, a dispatcher could be heard over the radio saying to everyone: “You have just seen a very heroic passenger land that plane”.

Someone then asked: Did you just say that one of the passengers managed to land the plane?”.

“That is absolutely correct”, the controller confirmed.

“Oh my goodness me – that was an absolutely great job!”, the person replied.
