You should be ready and willing, and wanting to quit, when you finally decide to quit smoking. Quitting smoking is one of the most important steps you can take in order to help yourself to improve your general health.

The very first thing that you do when you decide to become a non-smoker, is to give yourself the most precious gift a smoker is able to give you, which is the gift of prolonging the remainder of your natural life. Making this momentous decision will also give you the gift of improving your general health; and also the gift of vastly improved self-esteem and self-confidence that comes with better health. You will also experience a profound sense of comfort and peace of mind, simply by knowing that you have helped your health to improve in such a positive way.

When you quit smoking, you will feel so much happier and so much healthier, because once you have begun this journey, you will not be coughing quite as much; you will not have so many sore throats and things like a stuffed-up nose; you will have much more energy to do all kinds of things than you did before, and you will also find that you are able to do much more general exercise such as walking, running, or swimming than you could manage to do previously. If you are at your place of work, inform the people that you work with that you are now a non-smoker, Befriend fellow workers who are also non-smokers to enjoy your tea breaks with, or spend your tea breaks doing something different like going for a walk in the fresh air on your own. This in turn will of course burn up some calories and will help to keep your weight down.

Avoid triggers that tempt you to smoke, like having an alcoholic drink such as wine or beer. So try drinking where smoking is prohibited, or simply choose non-alcoholic drinks. And when you have had a meal at home, and your custom was to end the meal by lighting up yet another cigarette, eat something healthy like an apple or some other piece of fresh fruit.

Use what is known as distraction techniques. Every time you find yourself getting bored at home and you start thinking it’s time to smoke, do something to keep you physically busy, like wash the dishes, watch something interesting on the television, have a long chat with someone on the telephone or take up some kind of exercise for half an hour or so.
