The Eighty British Tourists Who Had To Spend A Night in Spain Instead Of Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a tiny British overseas territory in the Mediterranean, that remains on the UK’s list of “safe” countries and territories, where British holidaymakers can visit without having to self-isolate for 14 days in quarantine when they return to the UK. Spain, on the other hand, is now no longer on this list, having been taken off it due to a huge increase in Covid-19 cases, and therefore all travellers returning to the UK from Spain are now required to self-isolate for 14 days in quarantine upon their return to the UK.

Gibraltar Rock, Gibraltar

Eighty British Tourists who paid in full for a dream trip to quarantine-free Gibraltar, found their dream trip had suddenly turned into a nightmare. Everything became suddenly chaotic, when their flight back from Gibraltar to Gatwick Airport in the UK had been cancelled due to bad weather on Tuesday, the 24th August. This meant that they would all need some sort of overnight accommodation.

Because there were hardly any hotel rooms available overnight that night in Gibraltar, all of the eighty British tourists were accordingly put onto a bus by the airline, and driven across the border in the middle of the night, to a hotel somewhere in Madrid, the capital of neighbouring Spain. And the fact that they had spent a whole night in Spain, meant they had to isolate for 14 days when they got home again, which accordingly meant that if they were workers they would have lost out on two weeks’ pay.

Many of these tourists had carefully saved up the money for this trip of a lifetime, and accordingly, some of them were feeling anxious, frightened, scared, angry and/or upset about having been forced against their will to spend a night in a foreign hotel, somewhere in the wilds of Spain. Some of these eighty British tourists might well have chosen to holiday in Gibraltar rather than the more popular Spain, purely because of there currently being a lot less Covid-19 cases in Gibraltar than in Spain.

Gibraltar currently has only 53 Covid-19 cases, with only four recorded on Monday, 23rd August; four recorded again on Tuesday 24th; and five on Wednesday 26th. On the other hand, Spain currently has 233,253 Covid-19 cases, and had a sudden increase of 19,382 Covid-19 cases recorded on Monday, 23rd August.

Gibraltar’s Chief Minister has said that they are now doing a lot more testing for Covid-19 than other places, and they were very successful at identifying positive cases and imposing self-isolation. They continued to test about 2% of the inhabitants of Gibraltar a day, which is about 1.2 million people a day in the UK. He also said that although they have larger numbers of cases detected, they do not have anyone in hospital with Covid-19, or anyone dying from Covid-19. Gibraltar is a “safe” country.
